Before my second hospital setting experience, I was able to meet with my patient, Miss H., and conduct a deeper discussion as to my role during her next steroid injection procedure that would take place in a surgery center. I had the appropriate forms ready for signature and we had time to discuss prior medical history and the patient’s experience with other procedures like this.
Miss H. was experiencing a lot of pain in her lower back due to degenerative disc disease and was scheduled for steroid injections in both sacro-iliac joints near the base of her spine. During this pre-op visit, we discussed a plan for getting back on the road to a healthier lifestyle and this included ways to combat depression as well as social and physical activities she would like to do. Ways to lower stress were also planned. Her pain level was 8 on a scale 1 to 10, with 10 being high. She was using medication, ice packs, and a tens unit (electrical device) to alleviate/mask the pain.
A body scan with my hands revealed all the chakras were out or in an imbalanced state. The energy flow was slow throughout the energy field and it felt like “pudding” at every level. We talked for a while before I placed my hands on her lower back. This time allowed her to relax mentally and physically. My hands stayed there for about twenty-five minutes, like little hot pads. The pain scale went down to 6 and chakras below the heart were still blocked.
We had covered all the main points ready for the next day. We agreed it was important to get the energy field back in after the injection procedure, we agreed to do affirmations, and we confirmed my role during the procedure.
We arrived early at the surgery center and had time to talk and be relaxed. I was able to escort the patient to the pre-op area, perform a brain balance technique and do some reiki in a quiet and undistrubed manner. This time I witnessed the IV tube being inserted in the patient’s hand and I felt comfortable while the nurse asked the patient questions, etc. Then Miss H. was taken to the operating room.
Meanwhile I went back to the waiting room and closed my eyes, stuck fingers in my ears and did my visualization work – surrounding the patient and assisting team with white light. No one seemed to notice my strange posture. After twenty minutes I was called back to the recovery room. Immediately I assessed the energy field and began the unruffling technique and did a (energy field) pain drain about 3 feet above the bed. One of the nurses was watching and nodded approvingly when he recognized I was doing reiki and touch therapy. My patient was doing very well. I could see the monitor above the bed showing the oxygen level in the blood, blood pressure, etc. After twenty minutes we were walking out of the hospital with the patient mentally alert and feeling very relaxed. She was a little wobbly on her feet. This was a success story – the nurse had found a vein easily, the patient was relaxed, the procedure had gone well.
In the hospital of our dreams we talked about a hospital without televisions, beds that were built for short people, etc. The hospital staff were wearing purple that day. We both commented on whether they realized the significance of that healing color. We will never know. For them it may have been another day, but for us it was a day to notice the little things like the color of a nurse’s uniform, the color of the sky, and nature’s sounds and sights.
For a few seconds we acknowledged the miracle of the physical body, for without the spiritual component and recognition of the Life force, the healing would not be complete. We both felt gratitude in our hearts.
